What Is a UV Egg Candler?

A UV egg candler is a special tool that uses ultraviolet light (around 365nm wavelength) to reveal hidden details in an eggshell that are invisible under normal light. Unlike standard candlers that just show shadows inside the egg, UV candlers highlight important surface-level clues that can make or break your hatch.

Why UV Light Reveals More

Eggshells — especially brown ones — contain a compound called protoporphyrin IX, a pigment responsible for the red-brown colouring. When exposed to UV light, this compound fluoresces brightly, revealing more than you’d expect.

Under UV light, you can:

• Spot hairline cracks and weaknesses
• Detect surface bacteria or contaminants
• See shell uniformity and thickness variations
• Estimate egg freshness based on shell fluorescence

Why Inspecting Before Incubation Matters
